about

An album of highs, lows, and heavenly blows.

Gale En Gorge is the debut solo album by Ann Arbor musician Michael Abbey. The title refers to "an emotional outburst at the gorge”.

Michael’s work experiments within dream pop and slowcore schemas while drawing on the pummeling minimalism of Spacemen 3, the oblique psychedelia of John Cale, the ecology of Dennis Wilson and Alex Zhang Hungtai, and the cinematic tactility of Scott Walker and Julia Holter. He also takes inspiration from his childhood memories of coastal vacation towns Ocean City, MD and Rehoboth Beach, DE.

Gale en Gorge documents Abbey learning self-reliance as a musician after years of debilitating chronic pain and dissociation that forced him to give up on his music performance major. Recovered from severe fibromyalgia and regaining his center, he had to cultivate his approach to analog synthesis and engineering from the ground up. Working through dissociation that hindered his ability to create, the record is an attempt to transition from one season of life to another; inner work navigated through his aesthetic principles and fantasies. The music is both memory focused and imagining another world. “Gale en Gorge” refers to the coastal environments emerging from the music as a safe haven for his full emotional range.

"Synthesize” explores sexuality and how it relates to fear of life, one's feelings and of one's self. After handing off the rough mixes to Ben Greenberg (Uniform, Pharmakon, Black Marble), the track began to express these themes with a more visceral edge as more dynamic imagery emerged.
